Octopus Paul Picks 'Spain To Winner World Cup 2010

"Spain To World Cup Champions' paul octopus prediction"
Germany, July 9 "Spanish fans had reason to celebrate Friday after Paul the Octopus predicted that Spain will beat the Netherlands to win their first World Cup title Sunday.
The world renowned octopus at Aquarium Sea Life in Oberhausen, Germany, also predicted Germany would overcome Uruguay in the battle for third place Saturday.

The psychic sea creature will be hoping to keep a perfect record for South Africa 2010, having already correctly predicted four Germany victories and two losses in the tournament.

Two glass cubes were baited with mussels and marked with flags of Spain and Netherlands. And Paul went directly to the Spanish tank and ate its mussel.

Half an hour earlier, the octopus chose the mussel in Germany’s tank over the confines of those marked with the Uruguay flag.

Come to Swimming In Oil-beach

Chicago-based Jane Fulton Alt photographed more than a dozen people drenched in an oil-like substance while standing on local beaches. "When I started to photograph, people would come up and ask if they could be involved," she says. "The pictures just flowed."

"Living on the shores of Lake Michigan, I am acutely aware of the disastrous toll the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has taken on all forms of life, especially as our beaches opened to the 2010 swimming season. This environmental, social, and economic catastrophe highlights a much larger problem that has impacted untold suffering as we exploit the earth’s resources worldwide."

A photograph that shows an empty lifeguard chair with the sign, "No lifeguard on duty" is a metaphor for the dangers associated with deep-water drilling. "It means that no one is really guarding life," says Fulton Alt. "We're involved in risky oil drilling practices that threaten everybody and everything that is living."

Tips for Pregnant women'should routinely take vitamin D supplements

London: Pregnant women should take vitamin D supplements on a daily basis, say researchers in the UK.According to the team at University College London Institute of Child Health, official bodies currently offer conflicting advice.

The Department of Health in the UK suggests pregnant women to ensure they receive a certain level of vitamin D - 10 micrograms per day.The researchers say this in effect endorses use of supplements, because diet and the sun provide too little.

But the National Institute of health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) said in its guidance that it did not support supplements. It has instead said that women should simply ‘be informed’ about the importance of having adequate vitamin D levels during their pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

The paper said the UK was the only one of 31 countries examined which did not recommend that women of reproductive age took a vitamin D supplement, and that it also fails to endorse a daily supplement for expectant mothers.

“The incidence of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women in Britain is unacceptably high, especially during winter and spring,” the BBC quoted Dr Elina Hypponen, co-author of the paper, as saying.“This is compounded by a lack of exposure to sunlight and the limitations of an average diet to meet the optimal need.

“In the most severe cases, maternal vitamin D deficiency can be life threatening to a newborn.“We believe that the routine provision of a daily supplement throughout pregnancy would significantly decrease the number of mothers who are clearly vitamin D deficient, reducing related serious risks to their babies,” Hypponen added. The researchers reported the paper in the British Journal of Nutrition.

Eating Brussels sprouts and broccoli ' can block the proliferation of cancer cells

" How dietary supplement could block cancer cells "

Scientists' have found how a substance, which is produced when eating broccoli and Brussels sprouts, can block the proliferation of cancer cells.

Researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James) have found compelling evidence indicating that the substance, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), may have anticancer effects and other health benefits. These findings show how I3C affects cancer cells and normal cells.

The laboratory and animal study discovered a connection between I3C and a molecule called Cdc25A, which is essential for cell division and proliferation. The research showed that I3C causes the destruction of that molecule and thereby blocks the growth of breast cancer cells.

“Cdc25A is present at abnormally high levels in about half of breast cancer cases, and it is associated with a poor prognosis,” said study leader Xianghong Zou, assistant professor of pathology at the Ohio State University Medical Center.

The molecule also occurs at abnormally high levels in cancers of the breast, prostate, liver, oesophagus, endometrium and colon, and in non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and in other diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, he said.

“For this reason, a number of anti-Cdc25 agents have been identified, but they have not been successful for cancer prevention or treatment due to concerns about their safety or efficacy,” said Zou.

“I3C can have striking effects on cancer cells,” he explains, “and a better understanding of this mechanism may lead to the use of this dietary supplement as an effective and safe strategy for treating a variety of cancers and other human diseases associated with the overexpression of Cdc25A,” he added.

For the study, the researchers exposed three breast cancer cell lines to I3C. These experiments revealed that the substance caused the destruction of Cdc25A.

They also pinpointed a specific location on that molecule that made it susceptible to I3C, showing that if that location is altered (because of a gene mutation), I3C no longer causes the molecule’s destruction. In the end, the investigators tested the effectiveness of I3C in breast tumors in a mouse model.

When the substance was given orally to the mice, it reduced tumour size by up to 65 percent. They also showed that I3C had no affect on breast-cell tumours in which the Cdc25A molecule had a mutation in that key location. The study was published online in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.Source

The Vampires Is no more scary' but sexy and kind creatures

"Vampires not bloodsucking monsters, but sexy and kind creatures"

Wellington, June 30 : Vampires are no more scary and evil bloodsucking creatures, but are sexy - even kind hearted, so says a researcher. Massey University Albany School of Management lecturer Andrew Cardow is a vampire researcher and has written on how the monster is now seen as an “everyman with fangs”.

Although vampires have always been ‘popular’ their image seems to have undergone a drastic makeover - from an ugly, fanged, nocturnal creatures to sexy, kind hearted, day creatures that are vegetarians too!

“The vampire of today has feelings, it has a sense of humanity,” New Zealand Herald quoted Cardow as saying. Vampire makeovers in the mass media had led to an acceptance “that the vampire was nothing more than a wronged, misunderstood unfortunate,” Cardow’s paper said.

His paper was updated for publication in the Vampires and Zombies: Transnational Transformations journal, amidst the hype of the latest film in the ‘Twilight’ series: ‘Eclipse’.
